Here's an article written by DJ Zimmie, The End Of DJing. Below is a snippit of it, but the rest is a must to read.
“You know how many younger DJs I ask that question to and they all say the same thing? They say, “Gimme whatever will work in the club”. They just want 20 disco tracks to have their “disco set”. They don’t actually like disco. They don’t give a fuck about the music. They’d play the same 20 disco songs for the rest of their life and not care.”, Riz told me... featured DJ Charles "chill 00" Mitchell
Chill 00 as his fellow DJ fraternity calls him, fell in love with music in the very early years of his life, listening to Hal Jackson and other jocks on WNJR 1430AM. 35 years ago he started rocking parties, playing the latest disco and slow jams at the West Side Boy’s Club in Newark, NJ. He hasn’t stopped since!
In the late 70’s and thru the 80’s when club music began to take over all the hot spots in NYC, and NJ., Charles’ skills went to another level, when he exploded on the college scene, tearing through campuses all over NJ. He then took his skills to “The Club”,playing in all the major area venues during a time when club music was at its height. His talent landed him residencies in historical Clubs such as, Paradisio, Zanzibar, Club America, Club 88, and he was a guest MC and DJ at the world famous “Garage” in NYC., opening up for the late “DJ Larry Levan”
In the late 80’s and thru the 90’s Charles kept rocking other smaller hot spots in the Newark area such as, The Redwood, Top Brass, The Mirage, Scandal’s, Ms. Scott’s Rainbow Room, Club Eleganza, Club Sensations and Boggie’s.
As club began to fade in the 90’s giving way to Hip Hop. Charles accomplished the unthinkable! He brought club music to the Bar Scene, turning “The People’s Choice Lounge” into the hottest dance spot in Newark, attracting moie, sports and music celebrates alike to hear him create “Turntable Magic” spinning classic, popular and underground club music three jammed-packed nights a week. He was one of the first DJ’s to successfully blend the neighborhood Bar into a thumping Club Spot that pulled in the “Club heads” from all parts of NJ. He also put “The Hollywood Lounge” back on the map through his legendary skills on the 1, 2’s, and 3’s, which has made him one of the most well respected DJ’s in New Jersey among his peers, young and old!
Charles’ unrelenting vision encouraged others to respond and assist him. This resulted in another wonderful accomplishment. The 1st “House Music Family & Community Unity Festival”, held in Historic Weequahic Park, Newark, NJ. The event proved just how much house music is appreciated in New Jersey.
Through his, and the commitment of those working with him, he hopes to continue this effort making it bigger and better in the coming years! His motto was taken from a classic club hit performed by Patti Labelle; “MUSIC IS MY LIFE”
